Values AT Work Ezine September 2006
Edition # 2

Hi and welcome to our latest ezine,

A special greeting and thank you to all our new ezine subscribers.

We have had a huge number of new subscribers since our last ezine. This is for two reasons; it seems many of you have forwarded the ezine to friends and business associates, which is fantastic and secondly that our book Leading Through Values is selling well and attracting a lot of new people to our work.

Thanks to all those people who emailed their comments on the last ezine.  Thanks also for all the questions on values.  We will continue to respond to questions as a regular feature of our ezine under the heading Frequently asked Questions.

We hope you enjoy this edition.

Regards from the team at Values AT Work

6.  Frequently Asked Values Question

Q: Can a number of my highest personal values hold the same priority for me ?

A: Yes. We call this a values constellation. Just like a constellation of stars your values may only mean something to you when held in consideration and relationship to some of your other high priority values.  The trick then is to consider the whole constellation and also note if any specific value seems to be the brightest star in your current situation or dilemma.

7.  Latest Values News and Research

Maslow Debunked Himself

Prior to his own death Maslow admitted that we do in fact live in an open values system and that human development was not a prescriptive, directionalised, sequential process towards a final state that we should all aspire to. In short he recognized his now famous hierarchy of needs diagram was flawed and misrepresentative of the human experience.
Although many values questionnaires still base themselves on Maslows' hierarchy, our own values inventory has always incorporated both philosophically and practically the emphasis on the individual deciding for themselves how to live their values and in which direction to increase or lower their energy levels in relation to specific values. In other words there is no prescriptive directionalised sequence of progress dictated to the user.
